Before the Japanese Occupation, Pillai contributed economically by starting up quite a few businesses of his own. Notably, he started up textile shops, floor and spice mills. As these resources were tradable, Pillai effectively contributed to commerce in Singapore.
Being a pious Hindu, he contributed socially as a philanthropist. Firstly, he had donated a large sum of money to the Sri Perumal Temple to build a costly gopuram at the temple's entrance.Secondly, his donations helped in the erection of th first Indian Wedding Hall. His philanthrophy splatters over the history of Singapore and it is impossible to mentions all of them in detail. However, it is worth know ing that he financially supported Indian missionaries who cam e to Singapore.
